Inter director Piero Ausilio said they were “forced” to sack Frank de Boer, but hints caretaker Coach Stefano Vecchi is an option to stay on.

The Nerazzurri debut under Vecchi in a Europa League trip to Southampton this evening, follow the action on the LIVEBLOG.

“When a Coach changes, there is responsibility for everyone. We are all together, in bad and good, directors and players are all one unit,” Ausilio told Sky Sport Italia.

“We were forced to make this sudden change on the bench. There is a new direction and so more than ever we need greater unity and effort to get out of this situation.

“De Boer arrived too early into this situation. The project was ambitious, he is a great professional and worked 24 hours a day for the Inter cause: we saw some good games and others less impressive, but above all the results just didn’t arrive. An Inter that loses that many games cannot be accepted.”

Primavera youth team Coach Vecchi takes charge against Southampton tonight and presumably also on Sunday with Crotone.

“He is a great professional, above all he’s an Inter fan and it can’t hurt to have someone who works with his heart at this moment.

“There is no time limit on Vecchi, nor is it guaranteed that his experience on the bench will end on Sunday. Tomorrow the club owners will arrive and we’ll evaluate all the prospective Coaches, including Vecchi.”

Stefano Pioli is believed to be the hot favourite, but Chinese owners Suning are not convinced.

“Despite what some want to suggest, Inter are a united entity and not disunited. We will all together decide what is best for Inter.

“We’ll talk to the owners first, then organise meetings with Coaches over the next few days to resolve the situation in two to three days.”

Will whoever comes in be just a caretaker for the rest of the season or given a long-term contract?

“We are simply talking about a good Coach who knows Italian football without necessarily being Italian, he can also be foreign, but it’s a situation we’ll have to work out.

“At Inter there is pressure because it’s a big club and someone has to be able to sustain this project regardless of his nationality.”

It’s reported the Nerazzurri won’t offer a long-term deal because they expect Diego Simeone to leave Atletico Madrid and take over at San Siro next season.

“I do not work on assumptions, but on the present and on facts, so I am not going to evaluate Coaches with contracts at other clubs. We will make the best choice for Inter.”

Are Guus Hiddink and Marcelino on the short-list?

“I will not name names. Your curiosity will be satisfied over the next few days,” concluded Ausilio.

“We want to find the right person and will make it official once we’ve found him.”
