Antoine Griezmann was clinical when presented with a gift by Andre Zambo Anguissa, whose first touch was awful and allowed the Atleti star to go clear, side-footing it past the on-rushing goalkeeper.

There was possibly even worse news for Marseille on 31 minutes, as captain and star man Dimitri Payet limped off in tears when his thigh injury flared up again.

Straight after the restart, Griezmann doubled both his tally and Atletico Madrid’s lead, springing the offside trap on a Koke assist to dink it over Steve Mandanda from close range.

Diego Godin’s header glanced the near post from a corner, but Marseille’s best chance saw substitute Kostas Mitroglu’s glancing attempt bounce off the inside of the upright and Jan Oblak kept out Jordan Amavi.

Gabi added the final nail in the coffin of Marseille’s hopes from another Koke assist, this time controlling at the back post to surprise Mandanda.
