Emanuele Giaccherini’s agents says Atalanta “like him a lot” and says there was a “misunderstanding” about his Napoli role.

The midfielder joined the Partenopei from Sunderland in the summer of 2016, but he’s only ever made one Serie A start for the club and has played just 60 minutes so far this season.

The midfielder joined the Partenopei from Sunderland in the summer of 2016, but he’s only ever made one Serie A start for the club and has played just 60 minutes so far this season.

“He’ll definitely leave Napoli,” Furio Valcareggi confirmed, speaking to Premium Sport.

“In August Fiorentina wanted him but they [Napoli] considered him unsellable and I don’t think he’ll become the 19th change now.

“With the full agreement of [sporting director Cristiano] Giuntoli, [Coach Maurizio] Sarri and [President Aurelio] De Laurentiis we will leave with no ill feeling.

“We were happy at Napoli, but there was a misunderstanding about his role and he has barely played since Euro 2016.

“Emanuele is still in good shape, he hasn’t lost a shred of his usefulness and he’s still very much being considered in January.

“Finding a player like Giaccherini in January isn’t something that happens all the time, because he’s ready to go and has been training as though he were a starter for a year and a half.

“Atalanta like him a lot, but I haven’t had contact with them. There was something with Chievo but now I’m afraid they want to keep [Roberto] Inglese because they’re in a difficult position, so maybe there could be an agreement with them for the summer.

Torino? I have to admit I didn’t behave very well with Torino, we signed a three-year contract with Toro for Giaccherini but as soon as Napoli came in we wanted them at all costs.

“That’s what we chose and I explained it to [sporting director Gianluca] Petrachi and [President Urbano] Cairo, who now refuse to talk to me.

“They need to know that out of 10 agents who sign a contract with Torino, to then be called by Napoli, 11 will go to Napoli.

“So it’s a bit far-fetched for Cairo and Petrachi to moralise because in football moralisers are still-born.”
