Gennaro Gattuso’s Valencia won the pre-season Trofeo Taronja by beating Atalanta 2-1 with a Hugo Duro brace cancelling out Ederson’s equaliser.

The traditional summer clash at the Mestalla saw Atalanta invited as opponents.

Luis Muriel’s free kick skimmed the woodwork and the crossbar saved Rafael Toloi from what would’ve been an own goal for his deflection on Yunus Musah’s effort.

Hugo Duro got both goals for Valencia on the night, interrupted by a temporary and spectacular equaliser from Ederson.

Juan Musso was kept busy in goal with saves on Carlos Soler and Samuel Lino.

  1. Already the Spanish sides beating all the Italian teams, shows they still can’t compete with them. Are Italian sides better if they were majority Italians in them?

  2. Antonio, Spain has been the dominant force in the 21st century, winning many European club trophies. La Liga is still the strongest league despite all the cash in England. Italy are just about number 4. It’s been clear for a long time that Serie A is weaker than La Liga, so our sides struggling against them comes as little surprise.

The crumbs of comfort are that the games are friendlies, that Atalanta are in transition, were playing away, and they only lost by 1 goal.

Let’s see how things are after the transfer merry-go-round and after Christmas.
