Alberto Aquilani believes Sassuolo Coach Roberto De Zerbi would be the right man to lead Roma. “It would be an exciting choice.”

The Giallorossi fired Eusebio Di Francesco in March and Claudio Ranieri reached the end of his caretaker manager contract.

Gian Piero Gasperini, Antonio Conte, Maurizio Sarri and Sinisa Mihajlovic reportedly turned them down, so Roma are now looking at Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca or Sassuolo’s De Zerbi.

Gian Piero Gasperini, Antonio Conte, Maurizio Sarri and Sinisa Mihajlovic reportedly turned them down, so Roma are now looking at Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca or Sassuolo’s De Zerbi.

“I really appreciate De Zerbi and his style of football. I even went to watch him in training at Sassuolo this season,” former Roma midfielder Aquilani told Sky Sport Italia.

“The type of approach he is proposing really inspires me. It would be an exciting choice, looking to a young Coach with fresh ideas.

“Roma need to make a choice and I don’t see any really impressive names out there who are available. I do know Fonseca, because he was at Sporting Braga when I was playing for Sporting Lisbon.

“Portuguese Coaches are all tactically smart and well-prepared, so I think their football is often underestimated. His Shakhtar Donetsk play entertaining football, but he doesn’t speak Italian or know the culture, so perhaps De Zerbi would be a better choice.”
