Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti and Porto boss Andre Villas Boas are the favourites to take over from Vincenzo Montella at Roma next season.

Montella was appointed on an interim basis yesterday following Claudio Ranieri's resignation after the 4-3 defeat to Genoa at the weekend.

The 36-year-old is in charge until the end of the season when it is expected that Roma will try and lure one of the biggest names in European football.

It's no secret that Ancelotti is the No 1 choice for the position. He has expressed a desire to coach Roma in the past and is said to be considering his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.

Villas Boas is widely regarded as one of the brightest tactical minds in the game after having work alongside Jose Mourinho for many years.

He has yet to lose a game in charge of Porto this season, winning no fewer than 26 games out of 29.
