Former Milan Coach Carlo Ancelotti has said he ‘couldn’t coach Inter’ out of respect for the Rossoneri.

The ex-PSG, Chelsea and Real Madrid boss was linked with a return to Milan in the summer before deciding against it, paving the way for Sinisa Mihajlovic’s appointment.

The 56-year-old won two European Cups and two Scudetti with the Rossoneri as a player, before again winning the league and two Champions League titles as Coach.

“I could not coach Inter,” he said to Goal.com.

“Because I had so many years at Milan, it's a question of respect towards my history and the history of the club I have coached.

"There are many squads that I must avoid. I cannot go against my history.

"When I finished with Madrid, there was contact with Galliani. We met in Madrid but I had to have this operation.

"I would have been out for four months and I wouldn't have been able to be at 100 per cent.

"So, while it disappointed me a little, it was the right thing to do and Milan understood this.

"I have had the good fortune to have enjoyed myself everywhere I have coached.

"For this reason, I can't say that I would not return to one club or another. I would certainly return to Milan, just as I would return to PSG.

"Regardless of how things finished, they are experiences of which I have great memories."
