Milan captain Massimo Ambrosini insists the club will still be competitive despite some high profile departures this summer.

The likes of Pippo Inzaghi, Mark Van Bommel, Gennaro Gattuso, Alessandro Nesta and Gianluca Zambrotta have left at the end of their contracts.

Clarence Seedorf and Mathieu Flamini could also follow them through the exit at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

“This change that we’re experiencing now is bigger than ever before,” the midfielder told the Corriere dello Sport.

“Now we’re at a crucial turning point – the most important one that I can remember since I’ve been here at Milan.

“The players that left Milan in the past all left one at a time. This time a number have left simultaneously and quality-wise those players are of a special type.

“However, Milan have shown before that they can carry on without the likes of great players like Andriy Shevchenko and Kaka. I am convinced that we will be able to continue winning.”

Milan, who failed to lift any silverware this season, handed the former Vicenza player a new one-year contract recently.

He’ll be joined in the squad by Riccardo Montolivo, the Italian international who has arrived on a free from Fiorentina” data-scaytid=”26″>Fiorentina.

“It would be dangerous to give Montolivo too much responsibility in his first season here at Milan,” added the veteran.

“You can’t ask Montolivo for a lot. You don’t obtain or reach important things quickly.

“New players? Currently, nobody knows what the club’s plans are for the transfer market…”

Although the Diavolo finished the campaign empty-handed, he insists that the season was not a failure.

“We achieved what was asked from us, although we know that we could have done better. Champions Juventus” data-scaytid=”32″>Juventus played better than us, but we still could have won the Scudetto.

“We lost the Italian championship in the Champions League matches against Barcelona because of mental fatigue.

“In that period we only collected two points from the three games with Catania, Fiorentina and Bologna.”
