“In addition to my former teams I like to watch Napoli, Manchester City and Chelsea matches,” Alonso told Marca.

“Both the Azzurri and City play really well, [Coach Maurizio] Sarri has been able to communicate to his players how to organise the play, and they’ve been showing quality in their game for years.

“I really like Jorginho, he’s not a well-known player but he’s perfect for Napoli. He’s always involved in the play, giving alternatives to his teammates and great dynamism.”

Alonso won 114 caps for Spain, during which he often came up against Gigi Buffon, who was in tears after Italy lost their World Cup play-off with Sweden.

“I was sorry, because he gave everything. He is so admired and respected that it hurts. Football gives many joys and sorrows and he is a champion. That's why everyone admires him."
