Massimiliano Allegri believes Milan will target the Champions League victory in 2013, “but we can do great things this season too.”

The Rossoneri are through to the final 16 of the competition and will face Arsenal in the knockouts.

“Barcelona continue to be the best team in the world, but when we played against them – especially in Spain – they created few dangers,” he told the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We emerged from that game aware of what we could achieve against them. I believe next term can be the right one for the Champions League, but we can do great things this season too.”

Allegri won the Scudetto in his first campaign on the Milan bench and they are now joint top of Serie A with Juventus, but he is yet to extend his contract that expires in June 2012.

“We haven’t yet agreed the figures for my contract with Adriano Galliani and President Silvio Berlusconi. If they confirm me in the job then I’m happy, as it’ll mean they have faith in me. I know full well where I have to improve as a Coach.”

Recently Berlusconi has publicly criticised his tactician for leaving Pippo Inzaghi in the stands.

“In the last few games we have played badly and had some problems, perhaps due to tiredness, that were already visible in training,” continued Allegri.

“I often speak with Berlusconi and he asked about Inzaghi. I said that as he hadn’t trained in a while, I couldn’t take him into consideration. Obviously some of the fans might not agree with my decisions, but Milan are not just a team looking for entertainment, but also the result.

“Inzaghi has made football history like many other champions, but I have to evaluate what he can give me on the field today.

“Milan have to be more clinical and control possession better. Juventus have something special, as if they are unbeaten this season then there has to be a reason for that.

“The Bianconeri are the joint Scudetto favourites along with us, even if the others are doing well and Inter remain a great squad.

“Among my players Ignazio Abate has made the most significant improvement. Who is the symbol of Milan? It’s too easy to say Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Thiago Silva, so I’ll vote for Antonio Nocerino.”
