This sparked speculation that Allegri could be lined up as a potential replacement should Carlo Ancelotti be sacked or even resign.

Napoli are in crisis, with a series of poor results and above all in-fighting that has seen President Aurelio De Laurentiis freeze their wages for October.

It’s the precursor to a fine of up to 25 per cent of their salary as punishment for refusing to enter a training retreat.

Allegri has been out of work since parting company with Juventus in June, but the jobs he had been linked with – at Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich – do not seem to be options now.

There is still Arsenal and potentially Manchester United, but if he were to remain in Italy, then Napoli would be an intriguing destination.
