Former Milan Coach Max Allegri says Andrea Pirlo’s departure from San Siro in 2011 was a decision made by both the player and club.

The 35-year-old has since flourished for both Juventus and Italy, prompting heavy criticism of the Rossoneri for allowing one of their star players to leave.

However, speaking to Radio Deejay, the tactician believes it is pointless for Milan to have any regrets over what has happened.

“It was a decision made by Andrea and by the club, who decided not to renew the contracts of players over 30 by more than one year,” Allegri commented.

“He is doing very well with Juventus and with the national team. Now with Italy he is playing in the same position I wanted to play him in three years ago, but people said I was crazy!

“Pirlo is a great champion, but Milan made their decision and when you make decisions you can’t have regrets.

“However, it was also a decision made by Andrea, not just by me or the club.”
