Massimiliano Allegri insists “Milan played a good game” despite their 1-1 draw with Lazio.

“It’s a bad moment, as at the first distraction we concede. The team played an excellent first half, not allowing Lazio any opportunities,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“After going 1-0 up we didn’t take some more chances, but then with this goal we were caught out after a corner and punished.

“The side played well in terms of technique and defending, but we lost our unity a little after the equaliser and allowed a couple of dangerous counter-attacks.

“We have to keep working and putting in this sort of performance. The defence worked very well, which was not easy against Miroslav Klose and Sergio Floccari. Once again, the only mistake we make in a match leads to a goal.

“How we get out of this situation is to keep working. We’re far away from third place, so we have to get back to winning ways and have a difficult game with Fiorentina” data-scaytid=”14″>Fiorentina coming up.

“We cannot let our heads drop, as if we keep playing like this then I’m sure the team will get some good results.”

Milan’s declared target of a top three finish is starting to look decidedly unlikely.

“It was important for us to get back to the victory so we’d at least close up on the Europa League zone. We must prepare as best as possible on Saturday to climb up the table, but if they continue at this pace at the top then nobody can catch them.

“Mattia De Sciglio was playing only his second game of the season, so felt the fatigue. Football is wonderful because after the 2-2 against Parma we didn’t take our chances and conceded from 35 metres away. It makes me smile, as anything can happen in this sport.”

Allegri had been particularly critical of Mario Balotelli after the 3-2 defeat to Parma on Sunday, but was pleased this time.

“Balotelli had a good game, working hard and attacking the space, which wasn’t easy against Lazio. I am happy with his performance this evening.”

Kaka scored a stunning goal, his first since returning to Milan after his spell at Real Madrid.

“Kaka achieved great things with Milan and he wants to prove he’s still a champion. He’s a humble guy and knows technique is not enough to stay at the top level, so he sets the example for younger players.

“As well as bringing a champion back to Italy, Milan have brought in an example in how to train and be a professional football player.”
