The central defender was injured against Frosinone last Sunday. While a report is expected today on his conditions, it seems highly unlikely that he'll recover in time for the decisive Saturday night clash against the Partenopei.

According to Calciomercato.it, Allegri is torn as he considers three main alternatives to make up for the absence of his iconic stopper.

Firstly, he may field Daniele Rugani. The former Empoli player is widely considered to be one of the most promising Italian defenders in years, but at 21 and with only six appearances in Serie A this season, he may be a little green to handle the likes of Gonzalo Higuain.

Otherwise Allegri could field Stephan Lichtsteiner, who has featured consistently for the Bianconeri this season and is certainly not short in experience. The trouble of course is that the Swiss would be playing out of his natural position, as he normally plays as a full-back.

Finally, the tactician is believed to be considering a change in formation, fielding a four-man defence in which Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli cover the two central roles.
