Napoli midfielder Allan says his side came within ‘one step of a miracle’ after Europa League elimination.

Having lost the first-leg of their Round of 32 tie with Leipzig by three goals to one at the San Paolo, Maurizio Sarri’s team knew they would have to score at least three in Germany tonight to progress.

And despite strikes by Piotr Zielinski and Lorenzo Insigne giving the Partenopei a fine 2-0 win on the night, the Serie A title challengers were knocked out on the away goals rule.

And despite strikes by Piotr Zielinski and Lorenzo Insigne giving the Partenopei a fine 2-0 win on the night, the Serie A title challengers were knocked out on the away goals rule.

“We were one step away from the miracle,” Allan told reporters after the tie ended 3-3 on aggregate.

“It is an important win for us after the first-leg, which we lost badly.

“We have a little bit of sour taste in our mouths after the elimination. Now we have to focus all our efforts on the League and having a great end to the season.

“We had to honour this shirt and the fans who came here.

“We gave everything, it’s a shame we did not qualify.”

Napoli now turn their full attention towards securing their first Scudetto since 1990. With 13 matches remaining, they hold a one point lead over Juventus.
