Injuries and a lack of form saw Defrel fail to deliver on Roma’s €20m investment last season, but the former Sassuolo striker has begun his subsequent spell at Samp with five goals in his opening 12 appearances.
“He had several problems at Roma, including the misfortune to get injured several times,” Giampiero Pocetta told RMC Sport.

“He had several problems at Roma, including the misfortune to get injured several times,” Giampiero Pocetta told RMC Sport.
“He has the qualities to do well and at Samp, he’s doing well. On top of that, the Coach is exploiting his characteristics.
“Ferrero was the first person to call me at the end of last season and find out if there was a chance of signing him.
“It was farsighted and he had other offers, but the choice was made by the player. He liked the environment and project.
“Samp are the right club for him. He gives a lot in his position on the field, plus he’s addressed the problems that beset him in Rome.
“He has great quality, so I’m not surprised at his start to the season.”
