The 26-year-old came through the Nerazzurri youth system, but after several loans and co-ownerships he joined Pescara and then the Viola.

“Ausilio didn’t make a mistake, he simply wasn’t ready,” Mario Giuffredi shrugged, speaking to Corriere dello Sport.

“He lacked the personality that he’s discovered with [Stefano] Pioli. He’s an Inter fan and they really like him there.

“Another two Coaches who really like him are [Milan’s Gennaro] Gattuso and [Sassuolo’s Roberto] De Zerbi.

“Milan thought of signing him under the previous ownership but now we’re focused on Fiorentina, with whom we’re close to signing a renewal.

“For me Biraghi is the new Grosso, he can still grow a lot.”

Biraghi dedicated his goal to the late Fiorentina captain Davide Astori.

“That touched Cristiano so much that it’s hard to talk about it. He saw himself in Davide, he was bewitched by his behaviour, his attitudes, his life lessons.”
