“People don’t realise this idiot, or not so idiotic person, turned down €95m during the summer transfer market,” he told reporters at a public event.

“That includes the €30m that Juventus offered me for Marek Hamsik. Some even knocked on my door for Higuain, which is why I put that clause in his contract. If someone is prepared to pay €95m for him then we’ll see. There’s always someone stupid out there willing to try.

“I did not put anyone up for sale because I had a new Coach and couldn’t afford to reconstruct the team too. We had all the right ingredients for a tasty football recipe.

“We have revenue of €120m compared to €380m at Juventus, so it wasn’t easy to keep the players we’ve got. I never lost a cent in cinema and I don’t believe it’s right to lose money in football either, as that would mean things aren’t working.

“Now I see others are joining my ideas, as Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Andrea Agnelli are both talking about a European super league. We should have everyone face everyone, so it’s not down to the luck of the draw who you’re up against.”

De Laurentiis also revealed a curious background to why he chose Sarri as his Coach after Rafa Benitez.

“I chose Sarri because he reads a great deal, he is left-wing and worked in other sectors like banking. I too used to play on the stock exchange and you need the ability to make quick decisions on the fly.”
