There had been reports of a proposal after Gonzalo Higuain’s €90m transfer to Juventus in the summer of 2016.

Now De Laurentiis has told Rai Sport precisely what happened in that meeting with Icardi’s wife and representative Wanda Nara.

“I met with his wife one afternoon in their office, she was very nice. I offered €55-60m. We also negotiated for a possible contract.

“Icardi is a world class striker and he would score 40 goals under the guidance of Maurizio Sarri. He could become like Ronaldo.”

Would De Laurentiis make that same offer for Icardi again?

“Never say never.”
