Francesco Acerbi admits it was “emotional” to make his Sassuolo comeback 10 months after he was diagnosed with cancer.

The defender’s life was saved when unusual blood tests during a medical just over a year ago led to the discovery of a testicular tumour.

In December 2013 the cancer returned, this time spotted during a routine doping blood test, and he finally made his Serie A return in today’s 0-0 draw against Sampdoria.

“It was my first match after 10 months, which was wonderful and emotional,” Acerbi told Sky Sport Italia.

“I started to have cramp after 70 minutes, but that was normal. This was a tough week for the team after we lost 7-0 to Inter, but despite the result it was just one defeat.

“We had to start from scratch and bring home points. It was a decent performance today and we were only missing a goal.”
