The Milan goalkeeper was made to look foolish after just five minutes at the San Paolo last night when Inler’s long-range shot seemed to wrong-foot him.

“The ball changed trajectory and went in a weird direction,” said Abbiati after the 2-2 draw.

“At first it looked as if it was heading towards the left, then after going past Francesco Acerbi it went right. Having said that, when these things happen, the fault always lies with the goalkeeper.

“It’s not easy to come back from 2-0 down in Naples, but we reacted well and managed this feat.”

Swiss international Inler also gave his view of that unusual goal and tried to reassure Abbiati.

“I hit it with a twist so that the ball would swerve mid-air,” revealed the Napoli midfielder.

“I intended it to change direction, much like a free kick, so I don’t think Abbiati can be blamed for that.”
