Italy international Federico Chiesa is set to miss out on Liverpool’s upcoming Champions League match at home to Bologna after some issues cropped up during Monday’s training session, the club have confirmed.

“It’s a pity,” said Liverpool coach Arne Slot when speaking about the former Juventus during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old reported for training as usual, but had some unspecified issues and is now not expected to be included in Wednesday’s Champions League squad to face Vincenzo Italiano’s side.

Slot has confirmed, though, that Chiesa is not expected to be out injured for a significant period.

It could still be a blow for his hopes to return to the Italy national team set-up, as Luciano Spalletti is expected to name his squad later this week ahead of Nations League fixtures against Belgium and Israel on October 10 and 14 respectively.

“Federico trained with us yesterday and came in today with some problems, and I’m not expecting him to be in the team tomorrow, Which is a pity for us but of course for him even more,” Slot told the media at his press conference on Tuesday.

“He was looking forward to a Champions League night at Anfield and especially because we’re facing an Italian team.

“It’s a pity for him but he will be there, many more nights to come for him.”
