Paolo Maldini could soon return to football in a professional capacity, as recent reports have linked him with a move to take on the role of sporting director with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad.

According to an exclusive from Fabrizio Romano on Friday evening, the legendary former Milan captain is the top candidate to take the Al-Ittihad job.

Maldini has been unemployed since his unceremonious departure from Milan, where he had served as technical director, at the end of the 2022-23 season. Sporting director Ricky Massara was also shown the door over the summer.

During his time as a director at San Siro, Maldini was credited with providing an important link between the first-team squad and the board of directors. He was also known as the team’s motivator-in-chief, educating players on the significance of representing Milan.

There were, however, some questions over the Rossoneri’s recruits and transfer strategy during that spell.

Maldini would be met by an interesting group of players if he were to take on the job with Al-Ittihad. The Saudi outfit currently have former Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema among their ranks, as well as previous World Champion N’Golo Kante, Brazilian Fabinho and ex-Lazio defender Luiz Felipe.

The immediate priority for Al-Ittihad is finding a new coach, after Nuno Espirito Santo was sacked on Wednesday.

  1. @ mikkel, human right my foot, is human right enmeshed and espoused by the Italian society? Why does hooliganism, hate speech and many atrocities pervade Italy yet they respect human right?
