Fiorentina are still pushing to strike a deal with River Plate for Argentine striker Lucas Beltran despite Benfica reportedly being ahead of them in the race.

The 22-year-old has been in impressive form this year in Argentina, registering 16 goals from 24 appearances across all competitions, including 12 in the league and three in the Copa Libertadores.

According to reports from Gianluca Di Marzio, Benfica lead Fiorentina in the race to land Beltran’s signature, but that does not worry La Viola at the moment.

Benfica have not yet officially agreed a deal with River Plate, while Fiorentina very much remain on the scene.

Reports from Di Marzio earlier in the summer indicated that Beltran could also be approached by Roberto Mancini for a call-up to the Italy national team, given that he does not currently seem to be on Argentina’s radar.

If Fiorentina are unable to land Beltran, it is reported that they could make a move for Spezia’s M’bala Nzola instead.
