In a recent interview, former Inter defender Marco Materazzi questioned whether Milan Skriniar has made the right decision to leave Inter for Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

The former World Cup winner believes that Skriniar is a very talented player, but ‘not the best’ yet as he still has certain areas on which he can and needs to improve.

Skriniar signed a pre-contract agreement with PSG in January and will team up with the rest of the star-studded squad in the French capital as soon as his current deal with Inter expires at the conclusion of this season at the end of June.

Speaking to Canal+, Materazzi asked, rhetorically, whether Skriniar has made the best decision for his development in moving away from San Siro earlier than Inter would have hoped.

“He is a very strong defender, but not the best,” he said. “When he applies himself, he becomes strong in a collective context. We must not forget that when Skriniar arrived he played well, worked and had the merit of making Conte change his mind.

“He could have left after the first year under Conte when didn’t play, but he improved a lot, he became indispensable to the team and the captain of Inter.

“In his position, I personally would have stayed at Inter. I told him publicly ‘Remember how the Inter fans loved you, I don’t know if you will be loved like this in Paris, I hope so,’ but all it takes is one look at Messi, he’s one of the best players in history.”

Inter still have work to do before this season draws to a close, with a Champions League semi-final spot to contend for and a top four finish in Serie A requiring a lot of attention.

Skriniar, however, still remains to be sidelined with a back issue and will not be involved for the Nerazzurri during their visit from Benfica in the Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday evening.
