Former Milan defender Gianluca Zambrotta says he is expecting Gennaro Gattuso to emulate Fabio Capello as a Coach.

Zambrotta played alongside Gattuso for Milan and Italy, winning a Scudetto and the World Cup with the ex-midfielder, and he compared the Rossoneri’s new man at the helm to Capello, whom he is assisting at Jiangsu Suning in China.

“If you look at his preparation and attachment to these colours, it’s barely a surprise,” the 40-year-old told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Given how much the club had spent in the summer and how many difficulties had arisen, a change of Coach wasn’t unthinkable. It was a great move.

“I’ve also got into this business, so I know the Coach is often the first to pay and I’m sorry for Montella… but I also feel a sense of pleasure for Rino, seeing him so high.

“He gave so much to Milan and vice versa, he knows the history of the club and what’s meant by ‘Milan spirit’.

“His grit and character are added values. He knows how to get everyone playing for the team, even in the most complicated situations.

“As a Coach, he did it at Pisa, Crete, Palermo: he’s a person who’s not afraid, and that’s an important gift for those in this business.

“He also offers more than the motivation and knows how to get something more out of whoever he coaches.

“I’ve known Rino forever, albeit as a player and not a Coach, although I can’t imagine that he’s changed in the meantime.

“A similar Coach? For his character and ways of managing, I’d say Capello: both have charisma and aren’t afraid of saying things to your face. Both live football with their guts.

“Some of my former teammates played with tactical inspiration: I’m thinking Guardiola, Conte, Deschamps: they were Coaches on the pitch.

“Gattuso is more of a motivator in terms of character, but that’s not to say that I didn’t think he’d become a good Coach one day.

“I can see the players throwing themselves into the fire for him. There are so many ways to win; it’s difficult to say which is the best method, but Gattuso will surely have his own.”
