Roma President James Pallotta rues not sacking Rudi Garcia “sooner” as the Coach “lacked passion” and “never spoke about tactics”.

Garcia was sacked by Roma last January after a 1-0 defeat to Juventus left the side adrift of the Bianconeri, but Pallotta is confident he now has the “right man” in the returning Luciano Spalletti, who subsequently took the Lupi on a 17-game unbeaten run.

“Spalletti is the right man for us,” he told the Giallorossi’s official website.

“As soon as I spoke to him in Miami, I realised that he was the person we were looking for.

“He already had experience with Roma, so luckily he’s very prepared from tactical, strategic and psychological perspectives.

“After the match against Juventus last January, it was difficult to deal with, given the short time available, but we went 17 games unbeaten, truly remarkable.

“This allowed us to get back in the [title] race. I think saying goodbye to Garcia was an easier decision than you might think because I had seen the direction the team was going in.

“It was [his lack of] passion, the way he spoke, the strategy, tactics and how he trained the players.

“During training, before, there was almost never any talk of strategy and tactics. Maybe it’s not that important in other countries, but it is in Italy. I should have done it sooner.”
