“Milan are favourites for the group,” he told a press conference today. “I thought that when I saw the draw.

“It is true that they have lost two very good players in Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva, but there are other elements that make Milan a great side.”

Zenit are in a much stronger position financially than Milan, as illustrated by the fact that whereas Milan had to sell Ibrahimovic and Silva to Paris Saint-Germain for €62m this summer, they could afford to splash €80m on Hulk and Alex Witsel from Porto and Benfica respectively.

The Russian champions take on Malaga in their opening group stage fixture tomorrow night. They welcome the Rossoneri to the Petrovsky Stadium on October 3.
