The Nerazzurri were targeting a return to the Champions League this season, but ultimately fell short and finished the season in fourth-place.

“This year wasn’t bad, because we returned to Europe,” Zanetti told reporters at the Niccolò Galli tournament in Florence.

“We hope this can be a starting point for our future. The League was fought until the end. We started well, but then we dropped some important points.

“Our objective is have Inter become more and more competitive.

“We are content and happy with the job the Coach [Mancini] is doing. We want to build a strong foundation with him to aspire to important objectives.”

Zanetti was also asked about the summer transfer campaign, with suggestions stars such as Samir Handanovic and Mauro Icardi could be sold.

“Maurito is our captain and has said he wants to stay with us. We have to adhere to Financial Fair Play though.

“As for Samir, we have to talk to the Coach to decide certain things.”
