Mauro Icardi’s wife and agent says “many teams” want the Inter striker, and that he deserves a new contract.

The 23-year-old only signed a new deal last summer, and the club has declared that he’s not for sale, but Wanda Icardi claims he gave up higher offers to stay with the Nerazzurri.

“I’m upset, because they’re not giving the right value to a player like Mauro Icardi,” Wanda told Calciomercato.

“I’ll explain how things went: a year ago, Icardi was worth €20m for Inter. They refused, and we turned down a lot of offers. The motivation was that Financial Fair Play meant he couldn’t earn more.

“Icardi set aside offers of high wages in order to continue playing for Inter. Today Mauro is a player for whom Inter are demanding a very big fee.

“If the value of the lad has tripled, then we should get a financial reward which Inter promised us. They guaranteed Mauro that we could touch-up his contract if the club’s financial problems were resolved.

“In that same summer though, they invested in a lot of expensive players. Icardi never had a problem waiting though, as long as everything was completed normally like we agreed.

“Because of that, the words coming from Inter’s directors have surprised me.

“So far a lot of clubs have moved for Icardi, I’ve had several meetings to ask questions and they’re ready to offer important salaries.

“For two years, Icardi could have had a really high wage in another club, but he chose to give up a lot of money and stay at Inter because he’s attached to the club.

“He lost the opportunity of a high salary, and also of playing in the Champions League. All that for Inter.

“It’s logical that if a club comes in – and we’re interested – and they offer €50m and a contract that Icardi deserves, Mauro would evaluate the idea of leaving having thanked Inter for everything, because at the moment he doesn’t feel valued based on the valuation Inter have of him.

“I want to add an important detail: last year we reached an agreement with the club to renew, but above the fixed amount which stayed very low, Inter changed the wage just for image rights.

“We sold 50 per cent of his sponsorship rights to the club to meet their demands, but the real wage is lower than they promised.

“Mauro’s football contract is not adequate, the change last year is only down to sponsors, even though his value has changed as shown by the price Inter are asking.

“A lot of people will say ‘Icardi can’t ask for a contract every year’. Perfect, we agree. But then Inter can’t ask €60m for a player who was worth €20-30m a year ago and not think about adjusting his salary.

“If Inter don’t want to appreciate Icardi, but change his value so clearly then they know they run the risk of losing him. We’ve already talked with [sporting director] Piero Ausilio about this in private.

“I repeat: Mauro has never had a problem being patient as long as things are set-up properly. If we only cared about money, we’d have accepted the offer which came two weeks ago from a Chinese club, offering €25m for two seasons.

“Icardi just wants to feel valued by Inter. For new signings there’s always a financial guarantee, but not for Icardi.

“That has created the problem where Icardi could leave Inter, having chosen to stay for many years in spite of financial and technical issues.”
