Former West Ham Coach Gianfranco Zola looks in line for a return to Cagliari, as Walter Zenga says he has turned down the role.

On from sacking Zdenek Zeman this week, the Sardinian outfit have been linked with the likes of Zola, Zenga and Delio Rossi.

Whilst earlier refusing to rule himself out of the position, former goalkeeper Zenga has turned to Twitter to explain today that he has rejected the Isolani’s approach.

“I would like to thank President Tommaso Giulini and Cagliari Calcio for having thought about my figure as technical guidance of the team but with regret, I have to decline,” wrote the former Palermo boss in a series of tweets.

“At this time, for professional and personal reasons, I intend to stay in Dubai to give my contribution to footballing movement in this part of the world.

“Remains the satisfaction of being contacted by a team with great tradition and an ambitious management as that of Cagliari calcio.”

Meanwhile, having played for the Rossoblu between 2003 and 2005 and contributed to their promotion to Serie A, it is Zola who the Gazzetta dello Sport now suggest is the frontrunner for the post.

His coaching experience in the Premier League and as assistant with Pierluigi Casiraghi's Azzurrini reportedly makes him a preferable candidate to the former Palermo and former Lazio Coaches.

The Gazzetta report that Zola has held talks yesterday with club owner and President Tommaso Giulini, before then meeting with sporting director Francesco Marroccu.

No details of an agreement are official at this time and it is expected that an announcement on Zola’s appointment will only arrive from Saturday onwards.
