The former Catania tactician had already been linked with the post last summer, but eventually Gian Piero Gasperini was chosen instead.
An ex-Inter goalkeeper during the 1980s and 90s, ‘Spiderman’ is again one of the options on the table for next season.
“If Inter were to call, I am free to leave. It’s no secret that it is my dream to be Coach of Inter and complete the circle, returning to my club to train the squad,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“I chose the hardest route to get there, going around the world without help, learning to make do and adapt to the players I found. The Nerazzurri are always in my heart, though.”
Zenga revealed his post-playing career was not exactly an auspicious start.
“I sold vacuum cleaners. I had talent as a salesman. I was re-organising my life after discovering I’d understood nothing about the first 38 years. The footballer who thinks everything is owed to him and will carry on forever.
“What a huge mistake. As soon as you hang up your boots, some won’t pick up the phone if you call and steal the money you thought was invested wisely.”
He did become a Coach in Romania with National Bucharest, Steaua Bucharest, then Red Star Belgrade in Serbia, Turkey’s Gaziantepspor, Al-Ain in Dubai and back to Romania with Dynamo Bucharest.
Zenga had success at Catania in 2008-09, but was sacked early into the next season by Palermo, so has now settled in Dubai with Al-Nasr – unless, of course, Inter pick up the phone.
