Walter Zenga confirms Inter asked for his availability before opting for Roberto Mancini. “It had all been going my way.”

The former Nerazzurri goalkeeper tweeted he was close to the job when Walter Mazzarri was sacked following a draw with Hellas Verona.

“I spoke to people close to the club ownership, who asked for my availability, but then they chose Mancini. It happened straight after the game with Verona,” Zenga told TeleLombardia.

“I always had a sincere rapport with Moratti, but evidently – and without rancour – choices were made that did not coincide with the desires of other people.

“When I tweeted that, it was the moment when it had all been going my way and could’ve ended positively, but instead it didn’t go the way I wanted. It was the perfect time, when I was free and the club looked for an Interista character.

“I will always support Inter and nobody should think I am sad to miss out. I have always said that in my view the club should not become a cemetery for old glories, but I do have experience.

“What I don’t like is that everything I did abroad is denigrated. I speak many languages and can work around the world without problems.”
