Simone Zaza felt some regrets after his senior Italy debut against Holland. “I earned a penalty, but also missed a sitter!”

He became the first ever Sassuolo” data-scaytid=”3″>Sassuolo player to earn an Azzurri cap at senior level and was brought down by Bruno Martins Indi during the 2-0 victory over the Netherlands.

“I am very happy and satisfied with my performance. I earned a penalty, but I also missed a sitter!” he told Rai Sport.

“Unfortunately my limit is that I can score some difficult goals and sometimes miss the easier ones, but I am trying to improve that too.

“I didn’t expect this call-up, to be honest. Last season the Coach wanted to see more or less everyone and I never thought I’d be in the World Cup squad.

“I am here now and will do everything I can to keep this jersey on my back. I really savoured singing the anthem.”

Zaza immediately formed a great partnership with Ciro Immobile, even though it was a brand-new pairing.

“Ciro and I had never played together before, but we get on pretty well. It’s a good start and looking to the future we may well improve.

“I’d never played this system before, but staying close it is easier to then create space for each other. Above all the last few days have been tactical lessons, but that’s normal considering the situation.”
