“There is a great understanding with the Coach and this is very important,” the 41-year-old said to  Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We all believe in the work Roberto is doing. It isn’t easy but we must all make a big effort, even us directors, to create a competitive group that will soon return to compete with the others at the top.”

Zanetti used the example of his difficult early seasons as a player at San Siro to suggest the best path forward for the squad.

“When we weren’t winning early on, it wasn’t easy at all. But I learned that you can only bounce back by accepting defeats and afterwards you can always improve and develop.”

“This has been a very difficult season. I hope that in these final eight matches we can give the best possible account of ourselves.“
