Javier Zanetti will retire at the end of this season to become an Inter director, confirmed Erick Thohir.

The President spoke to journalists after a publicity event today and clarified the rumours that had been in the works for some time.

“The meetings with Zanetti have been going on for the last couple of months to understand his vision. The discussion is done already, he’ll become part of the management.”

The captain has been at the club for almost 19 years and turns 41 in August.

Thohir was also asked about transfer targets for the summer and warned there have to be reinforcements all over the field.

“You need to grow the revenue and make the club healthy, then you can spend the money. The media are the ones who say the names, not me! I will only announce the players when we sign them.

“It’s important for us to understand at this moment which players will stay and which players will not continue.

“In the January transfers, we only had Jonathan and Nagatomo, so we signed D’Ambrosio. Do we need another winger in that area? I say yes. So we’ll be looking to bring in that kind of player.

“We signed Vidic because we needed leadership at the back. Even in midfield we are very few and in attack we need to review also, so in the end how you balance a team is very important.”

He was then specifically asked whether Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko could be a reality or a dream for Inter.

“It can be anything, but I only announce the players that we sign, not the players that we dream.”
