The Vice-President and former captain spoke to fans in a livechat on his Facebook page, answering questions about the past, present and future.

“We are trying to build something important here. It’s not easy,” wrote Zanetti. “There have been some unexpected difficulties, but we will try to overcome them all together.

“We are aware that qualifying for Europe will be difficult, but we’ll push to the last minute. I agree with Roberto Mancini, as next year will be the right one to get back to the top.

“Being Vice-President is a new adventure for me. I try to make myself useful and above all to do what’s best for Inter!

“Did I ever dream of being Coach? The important thing for me is to be inside this wonderful Inter family.

“President Erick Thohir has big ideas and wants to take Inter back where they belong. He will certainly invest.

“Will Icardi and Kovacic stay? The intention is to keep them. The player I’d love to see at Inter is Leo Messi.”

Zanetti was asked about specific players, such as the chances of seeing Paulo Dybala, Icardi and Xherdan Shaqiri together.

“They are three great players! Shaqiri is very strong and we need to give him some time to adapt. Icardi’s statistics speak for themselves, while Kovacic has the future on his side.

“Fredy Guarin has shown more consistency under Mancini.”

He was asked who his rightful heir to the captain’s armband is in the current squad and tipped Andrea Ranocchia.

“He is the most representative captain of FC Internazionale. I am certain of it. You’ll see I’m not wrong.

“I’m happy Davide Santon is back at the club and I’m sure he’ll give us a big hand.”

Zanetti was also asked to pick four ex-team-mates to play five-a-side football with, choosing Thiago Motta, Diego Milito, Walter Samuel and Maxwell.

“Who is the toughest player I’ve ever marked? I’ve dealt with many champions, but I’d say Ryan Giggs.

“The advice I give to young players is to respect this profession and do it with passion.”
