Inter vice-President Javier Zanetti believes Mauro Icardi “deserves an opportunity” for Argentina.

The striker has so far been capped just once for his country, and he has been repeatedly left out of the squad by Coach Edgardo Bauza.

“He’s been doing good things for a long time, and deserves an opportunity with the national team,” Zanetti, who won 143 caps for the Albiceleste, told Quotidiano.

“He’s a great professional and he has grown a lot at Inter, he’s our captain and he’s well-respected. I think a call-up will come soon and that he’ll do well, he has a great future ahead of him.

“He knows what he has to do on the pitch and what it’ll take to be called, he’s waiting and I’ve no doubt that the call will come sooner or later.

“Hopefully he can also give them a hand for the next World Cup.”
