The Azzurri boss urged Serie A clubs to give more space to young Italian players, but one of his own former stars believes it’s not quite that simple.

“After failing to qualify for the World Cup, it’s necessary to work to improve young Italians,” Zanetti agreed, speaking to ANSA.

“Mancini is certainly the right person for that. In the league though, regardless of nationality, I think talent must be rewarded.

“Basically whoever is the best plays.

“The Italian national team needs to start again and needs the best young players. We’re all happy when there are good Italian players on the pitch, it reflects well on a club’s youth system.”
