Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini opened the door to Gennaro Gattuso as their Coach. “He could become like Antonio Conte.”

The reports swirled around the newspapers this morning that Gattuso – who was sacked after a brief spell as player-manager of Swiss side Sion FC – would take over at recently relegated Palermo.

“He is just one of the options, but around 16 different tacticians have come forward offering their services, so Gattuso is the 17th,” Zamparini told Radio Radio.

“I am known for sacking Coaches, yet they all want to come here even in Serie B. I’d have liked to have Gattuso play for us at the end of his career, as I like everything about the man. He doesn’t have much coaching experience, but he played for many years.

“I hope, if we get him, that he could become like Conte. In any case, Gattuso is not the only alternative. Beppe Iachini is free, Giampiero Ventura would like to return, while Giuseppe Sannino could reconsider.”

Sannino started the season at Palermo, but was fired after three games and recalled in the final weeks when relegation was practically certain.

Although Zamparini said he’d keep hold of the Coach even in Serie B, Sannino has now told the Sicilians he wants to go elsewhere.

“I am very angry with him, because to sign him last year I had to bow down to Siena,” said the President who then sacked Sannino less than a month into the campaign.

“I don’t understand why a Coach can come and go as he pleases without paying the consequences, whereas a club has to keep on paying him if he is fired.”

Another intriguing option for the Palermo bench has emerged, as Eugenio Corini announced his departure from Chievo today by mutual consent. He has a history as a player and captain in Sicily.

“Corini is too nice to be a Coach here,” insisted Zamparini. “He’d need to growl like Iachini and Gattuso.”
