Maurizio Zamparini assures Palermo “will show we’re a team worthy of promotion”.

The Rosanero were meekly relegated from Serie A last year, and a proposed sale to a consortium led by Paul Baccaglini fell through.

As a result Zamparini still owns the club, despite stepping down as President, and he spoke to the Sicilian side’s official website after last night’s win over Perugia.

“It wasn’t a thrilling performance,” the owner admitted.

“Perugia are a strong team, we set up to be very prudent and protect ourselves, as you sometimes have to do in Serie B.

“Ilja Nestorovski has the right character to give us more, which is why he’s become captain.

“The team is together as a squad, we’ll need everyone to reach promotion, but we also need the applause of the fans, I’m expecting even more people at the stadium.

“All games are difficult, and paradoxically the simplest games on paper can be the most difficult because the intensity isn’t has high as against strong teams.

“[Coach Bruno] Tedino sets the team up brilliantly, the problem will come in October when we have players away with their national teams.

“Hopefully common sense prevails from the Lega, we’ll still show ourselves to be a team worthy of promotion.”
