Lazio forward Mattia Zaccagni has also been sent home from international duty, as he will not recover in time to for Italy to play against England on Tuesday.

The Azzurri are due to host Malta at the Stadio San Nicola this evening, kicking off at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

Zaccagni was left behind at the Coverciano training camp while he tried to undergo treatment with an eye to being ready for the England match at Wembley Stadium.

However, medics decided today that he would not be fit in time, so has been sent back to the Lazio camp.

Zaccagni joins the very long list of absentees for coach Luciano Spalletti, including Federico Chiesa, Ivan Provedel, Ciro Immobile, Mateo Retegui and Lorenzo Pellegrini.

Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Zaniolo were sent home to Newcastle United and Aston Villa respectively after they were formally placed under investigation for illegal betting.

It leaves the Nazionale with precious few alternatives for these two crucial EURO 2024 qualifiers.
