However, it now appears that he has changed his mind about joining when his contract expires on June 30, and he claimed today that he hasn’t signed for Maurizio Sarri’s side.
“Younes’ declarations are astonishing and disconcerting, especially considering that he is a player of the German national team and Ajax,” Napoli’s lawyer Mattia Grassani said on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.
“You could almost smile, were it not for the fact that in the middle of all this there’s a sporting contract, including the assignment of image rights, with a total of 31 signatures on various contracts, shared with his Italian lawyer.
“If he says he doesn’t remember having signed anything contractual or federal, binding him to Napoli from July 2018, it really is completely outside of reality.
“The Azzurri have all the contracts on their side, the ball now goes to Younes. Going by the statements he’s releasing, he wants to challenge those agreements.
“He’s got a mountain to climb though, he’d have to prove it wasn’t him who signed – I’ll repeat this for good measure – 31 times.
“There are also emails in which the lad asked Napoli to provide him with the contracts, with [President Aurelio] De Laurentiis’ signature so he could subsequently hand them over to his lawyer.
“Maybe he wants to challenge this contract, but based on what I’ve no idea.
“You’ll also remember the joy he expressed in various interviews in those days [when he was in Naples], where he passed his medicals with flying colours.
“The contract can’t be invalidated, as things stand Younes will be a Napoli player from July 1, 2018 and we won’t budge from that.
“If this situation leads to the player not reporting for pre-season training, reiterating this dispute and – this is really fantasy football now – trying to sign for another club with a new contract it would be a really bad scenario for the player and his eventual club.
“We’re talking about bans and heavy financial sanctions, with possible transfer bans and even penalties in the League.
“We’d move in to the realm of sporting justice, which has the jurisdiction to punish both the player and a possible club.
“Any recourse to the regular justice system would happen to get any possible damages requested by Napoli, but right now we don’t want to pour any more oil on this fire.
“Even if Younes were the Maradona of the third millennium, no director would take these risks to sign him.
“The commitment [to Napoli] is a very long-term one, five years, which is the maximum that can be signed in Italy.
“Any repentance or change of horizons, perhaps if other clubs were willing to offer more money to the player, will depend entirely on the will of SSC Napoli.”
