Chievo captain Sergio Pellissier believes his side will get relegated if they continue to demonstrate the same mentality.

Last night’s derby defeat to rivals Verona means the Flying Donkeys are now only three points above the drop zone, having taken just five points from their last 13 matches.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the veteran forward reserved some harsh words for his side’s current predicament, adding they need to start playing to win rather than to avoid defeat.

“We need to get back to thinking positively, we need to think about winning matches,” Pellissier commented.

“We can’t think about not losing, otherwise you won’t go anywhere.

“Possession of the ball is useless, we need to be more ruthless. Playing like this, you get relegated.

“If we want to stay up we need to show the humility and character of Chievo. That doesn’t just apply to us players, but also to the fans.”

The 38-year-old stressed that while the 1-0 derby defeat hurts, his side must quickly get it out of their system.

“It hurts to lose the derby in that manner, especially against a direct relegation rival.

“That is football, we cannot beat ourselves up over a defeat. We need to immediately get back on track to get as many points as possible.

“We lost, we failed, now we begin again. The season is still long and anything can happen.”
