The captain died in his sleep at the age of 31 on March 4.

“We see and hear Astori everywhere: in the locker room, on the field, in the dining hall. He’ll always be there,” Vitor Hugo told the Corriere dello Sport.

“It’s wonderful that everyone talks about him. His locker is still there, just like his seat in the dining hall. When we sat in front of the video screens to study our next opponents, the chair where he usually sat was also left empty. Davide is within me.”

It was Vitor Hugo who scored the first goal against Benevento when the Viola returned to the pitch and he was the player who stepped into Astori’s shoes.

“He was such an important reference point for me. As I’m left-footed and accustomed to moving on the centre-left of the defence, Astori was my mirror for all these months.

“Since I arrived in Italy, he was the model I was trying to replicate.”

This week, Fiorentina were given permission to rename their training ground after Astori.
