“It’s evident that if cinemas and theatres open with the necessary social distancing measures, then obviously stadiums can too if they follow the same guidelines,” Professor Matteo Bassetti of the San Martino in Genoa hospital told Radio Marte.
“Some Italian stadiums really do have the capability of keeping people socially distanced. I hope that soon we can get back to normality, as we need to start talking about things that aren’t COVID-19 and football fits the bill.
“I agree with Professor Zangrillo: the virus has weakened, that is a fact shown in the clinical evidence, and those who criticise us for saying that ought to take a tour of our hospitals.
“The people who we hospitalised a few weeks ago were practically dead by the time they arrived, now they turn up and ask when they can go back home.
“Coronaviruses of the past then mutated into types of influenza and, I don’t want to give false hope here, but it could well be that this virus too has adapted and we are more capable of defending ourselves against it.”
