Fiorentina have announced that they could scrap their plans of building a new stadium after recent revelations about the costs of building at the Mercafir site.
President Rocco Commisso has made no secret of his desire to build a new venue and replace their current home at the Artemio Franchi.
The billionaire received a response from the Mayor and the “public officials” about the Mercafir site in north-eastern Florence, where the patron had expected to build the new Stadio della Fiorentina.
In an official statement made by the club, the “tender documents” revealed some “details” the Viola don’t want to entertain and may look at other possibilities.
The club has explained that the price set at €22m to buy the land is already too high for the club to accept but are adding that other costs will make the Mercafir site “prohibitively expensive”.
“We would like to thank the Mayor and the public officials for their efforts in getting to this point,” a statement at the club’s official website reads. “While we appreciate the fact that a public tender for the land has been issued, we nevertheless have relevant concerns related to many of the details in the tender documents.
“In addition to the €22m price for the land, which we have communicated from the beginning as being too high in our view, there are a number of other direct costs that Fiorentina must incur that makes the overall price for the Mercafir site prohibitively expensive.”
The club has continued to reveal that there are concerns about the condition of the land and that they are without any guarantee of receiving a issue-free building site in a timely fashion, matching their target of completing the construction of a stadium within September 2023.
“Our desire is to actively cooperate with the Mayor and the Administration of Florence to give Fiorentina and its fans a new, beautiful and comfortable stadium,” they added. “However, while we evaluate our decision of whether to participate in the tender, we must say, humbly but clearly, that if this process does not happen in a timely fashion and at a reasonable cost, our willingness to pursue the Mercafir project will quickly fade.
“In the meantime, we will continue to entertain other opportunities available to us, including not building a new stadium at all.”
