The Viola handed out a 5-0 drubbing to Verona this afternoon, handing the former Inter Coach his first victory and points in the Viola dugout.

“It’s the win that our work over this period deserves,” Pioli said after watching his side lose to Inter and Sampdoria in their opening two matches.

“We are sorry that we hadn’t got good results in the first two matches. I am happy with the players, we have only been together for a little while and we needed something extra.

“It would have been good if the League could have started today. We need to try and show our potential on the pitch, which in my opinion is good.

“The club has bought quality players, young players with the will to work. It’s a good base.”

Pioli was asked whether Fiorentina could hope to secure European qualification this season, but replied that the main job is to stabalise after a disappointing eighth place finish under Paulo Sousa last term.

“I think the prospects for the team are a mid to long-term journey that will take us to a good level.

“What we manage to do this year will be to stabalise things. The important thing is that good players have come in.

“This means that in future we will get good results. At the moment, we need to grow and compete against difficult opponents.”
