Empoli were penalised for an elementary mistake, as they didn’t realise that Rafael Leao could not be offside from a throw-in.

The Rossoneri were struggling to break the Tuscans down at the Stadio Castellani after 78 minutes of football.

However, when Sandro Tonali went to take a throw-in, Leao realised he was in acres of space and had been completely forgotten by the Empoli defenders.

He could not be flagged offside from a throw-in, so was able to control and then roll across for Ante Rebic to tap in undisturbed.

Empoli coach Paolo Zanetti was furious, as Tonali took the throw-in several metres further forward than where the ball went out of play, but that is not within the VAR’s purview.

  1. What a surprise to see SC rushing to explain why Milan’s controversial goal was actually fine, even though, as she herself explains, it wasn’t.

  2. The goal was totally fine. Totally within the rules of the game – Zanetti’s complaints aside.

  3. This roma fan. You must be having sleepless nights because of Milan’s success. Well, you must know that Milan is a grade A+ European giant, while roma is a grade C Italian side.

  4. Pointless as no one said it could be offside. It’s like making an article for why Milan are given 3 points instead of 1
