Inter coach Simone Inzaghi confirms Romelu Lukaku’s injury is taking longer than expected to shake off, so is ‘pessimistic’ about him facing Barcelona or Sassuolo next week.

The Nerazzurri were coming off a 2-1 home defeat to Roma, their fourth loss in the last six Serie A matches.

Lukaku was in the stands, but did not feature and was tipped to make his comeback after more than a month out in the Champions League against Barcelona on Tuesday.

Instead, Inzaghi gave a far more damning version of events during his press conference.

“I am pessimistic on the possibility of seeing Lukaku against Sassuolo. He is working hard, but had new tests that showed he is still not in any condition to train with the rest of the squad.”

Lukaku has already missed seven games between Serie A and the Champions League this season following his loan from Chelsea.

The 29-year-old Belgium international sustained a muscular injury in his thigh over a month ago.

He made three Serie A appearances this season, contributing one goal and one assist.

  1. And this was the guy the ‘brilliant’ transfer strategy was hedged on. I’m a fan of Lukaku and Inter, but not Zhang or Inzaghi.

To think Inter paid Sanchez $5 m euros to leave, but we lost Perisic because we wouldn’t bump his pay up by $2m euros… Missed out on Bremer and Dybala too, because Zhang got cheap.
